Meet Nigeria’s Female "Cool Runnings" Team 😁

Nigeria's Female "Cool Runnings": Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga (Photo credit: Obi Grant)

Have you watched watched Cool Runnings? 😏 Please go and watch it, then you would understand why I used that phrase 😁

Three bold, brave and beautiful Nigerian female athletes Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga who are based in the USA, are set to make history for Nigeria at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games holding in  Pyeongchang, South Korea in Bobsled.

Bobsleigh or bobsled is a winter sport in which teams of two or four teammates make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sled. Scary huh? 😨

As you all know (well for those who know exactly where Nigeria is situated 😀), Nigeria is a tropical region and doesn’t have subzero temperature that can facilitate winter sports. We have participated only in the Summer Olympics, which includes the Paralympics Games, where we have won medals in five different sporting events: Athletics, Boxing, Football, Taekwondo and Weightlifting. But these babes are determined to add Nigeria to that exclusive list of African countries, which include Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Way to go, babes!!! 😉

The three athletes have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $150,000 (around ₦70 million – aboki rate, o!) and create an awareness around the historical feat they are set to accomplish. Please lets help our brave hearts by donating.

Birthday Venue Ideas - The Fakoya-Smith Kids 👦👧

Image from Pinterest

Before you ask, no, I don't have twins, o! 😄  I would have loved to have twins 😀 But I thank God for the two beautiful children He graciously gave my husband and I: Oluwadijimi Zinachidi Issac (my son) 👦 and Oluwashekemi Lotanna Hannah (my daughter) 👧

We recently celebrated my daughter's one year birthday. So I was thinking it would be nice to share both my children's birthday party venues and plans...at least give parents options that are available here in Lagos, Nigeria based on both my experiences.

BIRTHDAY PARTY THEME: When organizing a birthday party or any type of party, it is nice to have a theme. This makes planning the party really exciting 😊  For my son, we did a Pilot birthday theme and we used a little angel theme for my daughter. Both themes were extremely cute 💕

VENUE: I HATE house parties with a passion!!! 😤  Especially when planning birthday parties for children! Unless your house is as big as a castle or the outside of your house is spacious and garden-like, then for me, it is a no-no to do house parties. My pet-peeves for organizing house birthday parties are the hosting stress and after-party-cleaning. I prefer to go somewhere, enjoy the service and come home to wash up and sleep. No late night cleaning after a stressful day. Yes, parties can be stressful if you are the host. That said, for both my children's 1st birthdays, I prayed seriously not to host it at home.

For my son, we used a lovely kids event center called, Park Land Amusement Center located at  Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos. They have a range of packages that you can pick according to your budget. What I loved about the place was the available games for kids to play. For my son's 1 year party, they provided the decorations, food for kids only, the DJ and MC and of course the games. We just brought his pilot cake (before nko!😜), food for adults (Catered by my sis-in-law's friend. Her food was yummy!) and of course our guests and the celebrant, Captain Dijimi 👮

For my daughter, we decided to do an intimate family birthday party (Recession,o!!! 😂 When they say there is a casting down, we, the children of God will say there is a lifting up! Can I hear an AMEN????? 😇) Now this was tricky because I did not know any family friendly affordable place in Las Gidi....remember, I hate house parties! 😒 Then my lil sis, Kiki, came to the rescue!!!! My Wonder-Woman 😚 She asked Eat.Drink.Lagos and one of their suggestions was Spur Family Restaurant.  So I goggled and found that their Victoria Island branch was just behind my office. So during my break, I went to check it out. As you enter you are greeted with a jungle and Red Indian theme ambiance which was very relaxing. I got to meet the lovely manager, who is someone I know 😉 By the time I went through the menu list and got a tour of the place, I fell in love! 💖 I call it the IHOP and Au Fudge of Naija 😁 I liked the fact that they had video games and puzzle games for both children and "abayas" (meaning adult-children 😀). The outside was facing the ocean....breath taking for photo shoots! Our guests loved the venue. The food, which they make from scratch as you order, was delicious. I was given a tour of the kitchen during the party to see how meals were prepared. You must try Spur's milk shake! A delight!!!😋 Another cool fact is that more than one party can be happening in Spur with no one distracting the other. In fact, there was another birthday party going on at another section of the restaurant during our party and I didn't even notice 😃 If you want to do a small get together on a budget, I recommend Spur Family Restaurant 😊  You can read Spur Restaurant's reviews from Unraveling Nigeria and Eat Drink Lagos

Lagos has many lovely event centers where you can organize birthday parties. If you ask or research you would find them around. You can check out this link with various kiddies event centers in Lagos.

VBS 2016 - Egypt: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace 𓀷

Once again, we went to Egypt to experience Joseph's story just like we did back then in our very first  VBS 2010 Egypt. But this time it was much better...we are more experienced now 😉

GROUP VBS has been our supplier for all our Vocational Bible Study programs from inception. It has been fun using their products to teach both children and adults about the Word of God through role play of different Bible stories.

By God's grace, next year we would be visiting Rome: Paul and the Underground Church. Already looking forward to VBS 2017 😊

This year would be my 5th VBS participation: VBS 2010 Egypt; VBS 2011 Nazareth; VBS 2012 Babylon; VBS 2013 Athens and VBS 2016 Egypt again. It has been a privilege playing the roles of the Celebration Leader (That is the Praise and Worship Leader) and the Co-ordinator of Operation Kid-to-Kid (OK2K), a meaningful service project that enables children to reach out to other children in their community by sharing God's love.

Here are some pictures of our VBS 2016 Egypt: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace

The Lindsey's Nigerian Revival Tour - The Manifestation

One of my favorite Christian couple are coming to Naija for a Revival Tour!!!! The Lindseys are one couple I admire. I like their honest, down-to-earth and candid way of life as individuals, a couple, parents and as Christ-lovers.

As always, I have the story behind how I got to know them...Lol! So one day, my little sister sends me a message asking me to check out a lady she follows on Instagram called Heather Lindsey. That both she and her husband reminded her of my husband and I. Lol! So I decided to check her out and as they say, the rest is history! *smiles*

 Cornelius & Heather Lindsey

Heather Lindsey is the founder of The Pinky Promise Movement, an organization that promotes honoring God with your life and body whether single or married. Pinky Promise was founded in January 2012 and has grown to over 50,000 women making a promise to honor God with their life. She holds an annual women's conference, "Pinky Promise Conference". We have Pink Promise Lagos branch representing Nigeria.

Cornelius Lindsey is an international speaker, pastor, and author. He is the Founder and Senior Pastor of The Gathering Oasis Church, a non-denominational church that is located Atlanta, Georgia, USA. His ministry include his annual men’s conference, his non-profit organization, “The Man Cave Society".

They also hold other annual christian programs such as Marriage Retreats, Singles Conferences and Statewide Baby Showers. I really admire their zeal for the work of God. And I love the fact that they try to spend time with each other even in their busy schedules: both as a couple and as parents. By the way, they have two adorable children, #LoganWilliam (He is a mini-me of Cornelius) and #TaylorMilan (She is just a mini-me of Heather). God sure gave them their carbon-copies! My sister also says their children remind her of mine *rolls eyes* Lol!

Arese Ugwu's Book Tour - The Smart Money Woman

This particular day, I got the usual e-mail course tips from Stephanie Obi of Step-B School and the topic was "How Arese Sold out her book in few days". So I was curious, I though it was A'rese Emokpae that won the recent 'The Voice Nigeria'. So I read through and before I knew it I was researching on Arese Ugwu.

Arese Ugwu is the founder of Smart Money Africa a personal finance platform for the African millennial (generation Y). She is a contributor to the Guardian newspaper, the host on Guardian TV’s new personal finance show “Your Life Your Money”, and a co-host for “Analyse This” on Ndani TV. She has helped shape the new narrative on personal finance in the media. She serves on several boards including House of Tara and the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation as a non-executive director, and is also an associate member of WIMBIZ, serving on its planning committee since 2015.

ARESE UGWU

Powerful woman, ba? Lol! I was so impressed especially after going through her blog on personal finances. Before I knew it, I found my self buying her "The Smart Money Woman". Immediately I got the book, I could not put it down. I marked every section that 'oohed' or 'aahed' me with my pink marker...Lol! Even was husband was intrigued by the way I carried and read the book everywhere I went. I kept saying to myself "Kia! My financial status must change,o!" And I kept singing "We making money, we making money, we making money this year"...LOL! My dear, we NEED to,o! This recession is a WAKE UP CALL for us Nigerians!

I had just finished reading and digesting the book when I found out on her Instagram page that she had a book tour in Victoria Island, Lagos. So I registered and headed there with my copy of the 'Smart Money Woman'. Got her to autograph my book and of course took a picture with her.

I learnt the following lessons from her book and from her book tour:
* There is nothing as good as having financial freedom
* Life happens, so start planning how to save and invest your money wisely
* Learn to track your expenses
* Have money goals and try and put them in portfolios
* Know your net worth. Your assets, not your bank account, determine your net worth.
* Develop a sustainable budget by having a Spending Plan (SP) e.g. Learn to divide your income into three sections: Long term financial goal (LTF), Short term financial goal (SFG) and Living Expense (LE) + include an Emergency Fund (EF). I shall not explain them..go, buy and read her book *sticks out tongue*
* Learn to grow your network. Your network is your net worth!
* Invest...Invest...Invest!!!! It is not enough to save ya money...Go put am somewhere were you fit make money on top of am! *speaking pidgin English for those who don't understand...lol!* Invest in stocks, real estate, money market (Treasury bills, bonds, mutual funds, e.t.c)
* Pick and work with an investment firm that would guide you with your investment needs. She highly advised you work with an investment firm that has a long and good tracking records. Also she advised that you do your own research on what investment options are available to you in Nigeria. Go check the Nigerian stock exchange website.
* The Cardinal Rule: DO NOT Invest in things you DON'T UNDERSTAND,o!!!!
* Discover your purpose and apply it to MAKE money, KEEP money and GROW money.
* The one that HIT me is that building wealth is more about creating more options that would create long term investments for you...multiple streams of income!!!
* Entrepreneurship is not really for everyone. Find your niche where you work and build on it. Though she encourages the entrepreneurship way, she advises that we learn to build our careers to the point that when we decide we want to become an entrepreneur, you are full kitted with tremendous skills to stand on your own.

What I loved most about the book was the story line that focused on Zuri, the main character, who was on her journey to financial freedom. I liked the way she gave 'Smart Money Lessons' at the end of each chapter relating it to the chapter's story line. That was awesome.
