The Williams Sisters in Naija!

I thought it was a joke until I saw the front page of the Guardian newspaper this morning. Venus Williams' face was the first thing that caught my eyes. Both she and her sister, Serena, who are both highly acclaimed International Female Tennis players and former World Number One Tennis Champions, are in Lagos, Nigeria LIVE! That's nice. My dad, who was a tennis player and lover, would have loved to see them.

The theme for the Williams Sisters' visit is Breaking the Mould (BTM) 2012. BTM is women’s empowerment initiative that recognizes and acknowledges the role that women play in shifting perceptions and encouraging development on all levels across the African continent.

While in Nigeria, the dynamic duo will inspire, motivate and mentor a broad range of audiences through a series of supporting initiatives which include; a lecture, a gala dinner and an exhibition match which will also be the first time the sisters will play against one another on Nigeria soil.

The Williaims Sisters' story serves to boost the morale of athletes and business people alike. Theirs is a tale of passion, determination, hard work and self-belief that has triumphed over many obstacles and circumstances to be champions on and off the tennis court. Their visit to Nigeria will help boost Lagos State as a destination for global sports tourism. The significance of hosting the Williams’ sisters in Lagos is positive bonus for the Lagos State Government especially at a time when the state is planning to host a major sporting festival. It re-affirms Lagos State’s visitor-loving personality and its objective to become a premium business, leisure, sporting and entertainment venue.
